Many thanks to Fergy for his enthralling captaincy in 2011 and welcome to our new Captain, the very engaging Harry H and his new Vice, calm and steady Jim Morton.
The season was ended with the overseas tourin the Western Algarve. Brilliant weather and stunning courses, find out more by going to the Overseas Tour page.

The 2012 season gets under way with the Winter Warmer on the 23rd March which our new Captain, Mr Harry Hughes, hosts at the new venue of Brampton Heath. Harry tells you all about his  carefully prepared plans below alongside a summary of the season's programme of events.

The details of all these events, plus all the other happenings in 2012, and back into history, can be found on this web site, just click the appropriate button on the menu, top right. You will also find an excellent photographic record  by clicking on Gallery .

Firstly, a few words of wisdom and welcome from Harry to whet your appetite:-

May I start with a big thank you to Mr Fergy Ferguson our 2011 Captain and master of ceremonies; now all I have to do is follow that!

Jim Morton (by popular applause on Fergy’s Captain’s day) is my Vice for this 2012 year and he and I are intending to put on a sparkling year for the society.

The Harry Hughes Theme for 2012 is (for want of a better phrase):-  firstly a selection of more local courses and earlier scheduled “Tee off” times (see programme below) for members and guests, better for them and their businesses, or so they are able to have time to slip in a quick (sly) 9-holes in the morning as well?  As we are all aware of the economic situation around us, cutting down on travel, time and expenditure gives a chance for busy members and “last minute dot com” members to attend (but don’t use this as an excuse not to book early)!

We should therefore have more time for that, all important socialising (bonding) element that I feel we as a society have lost a little over the last few years, or for others to get back home to their wives and family and put on their slippers and go to bed early (Matt Decaro, Al Harrison, Patty etc)!  I also want to try and attract some new and past members back into the fold, who have over the last couple of years not attended (so come on members give them a call and get them back please).

We have travelled far and wide as the DGS and played some outstanding venues (and “Goat Tracks” according to some) over the last couple of years but remember, the challenge is to get that little white ball in the hole in as few a stroke’s as possible, at whichever course you play (without whinging)!

I would also ask at this point that we the DGS remember and take the game of golf and its etiquette with us on our travels! It is up to the individual member to check each club and venue rules and regulations (normally on the club web site) and what they expect from us!

The committee have worked hard during the winter break (talking and debating and drinking in pubs) and I believe we have a good programme.I was mindful last year of comments made by members; regarding cost of events etc, and we have tried to address this by giving the members more back this year and lowering the cost of each event! The DGS have built up a healthy balance sheet over the last few years in order have a sufficiently large ‘kitty’ to cover up-front costs (deposits) and protect against unforeseen costs and eventualities. With that in mind Mr Dunne (Chief of Finances) will be providing a summary of accounts for all members, to give you all a better idea of how your money is spent. So watch out for Brian’s email, which you will receive within the next week.

We have tried to keep prices to a realistic minimum. We can announce therefore there will be a flat rate charge for all 2012 events of £50 for the day to include golf and dinner (last year it was £55 so we are trying). The exception to this is the Winter Warmer, which is reasonably priced at £30 to entice the seasonal golfers back into action! This year we have to pay more for this event but there is much less travelling time involved and if members decide to take advantage of the “Captains Offer” then this opening event becomes a freebie!

**Captain's Offer** "Pay £150 for any three events up front and get the Winter Warmer absolutely free".

I am also pleased to tell you that the 2012 annual membership subscription will be held at £10, but only if make your payment before 23rd March. Thereafter membership will cost you £15.

The other good news is that there will be NO entrance charge for the singles and doubles competitions this year.

Looking back at the DGS it has been very fortunate to be able to offer some outstanding prizes for a small Society, and so it is with great thanks and support from our very own Mr Philip Christopher Reginald Wilfred Bonham (Phil to his mates, come on down Mr Trucker Man). Thank you Phil. I have also been able to gain support and sponsorship from The Mawswley Motor Company, Moulton Mini Bus Services, Golfer Choice (Barrack Rd) and Vick Clarke (Sports & Remedial Massage Therapist) who will be advertising on our DGS web site, so please take a look and tray and support them!

The Order of Merit will recognise the most consistent player over the year's events, and in order to win it, you have to attend a set number of events. By making the prizes great here, it is our way of saying 'thank you' to those of you who have supported the society over the course of the year. So who can knock Matt Decaro off his perch (well he has got turkey legs) He he!!
